Volleyball Defensive Camps

volleyball liberoDefense wins championships.

We hear the above quote in every sport.  Football has bruising linebackers and shut down corners.  Basketball has 7’ players who block shots with ease.  But how do we define this basic concept in volleyball?

Volleyball contains skills not seen in any other sport.  Since these skills are always different and new to the beginning player it is very rare to see someone be a natural defender.  Like any sporting skill a systematic progression will ultimately help a player learn how to control a volleyball and be a productive team member.  Out of every play, 2 out of the 3 contacts do not involve offense and this is where we begin to see the defense concept defined in volleyball.  If you cannot control a volleyball you cannot attack and implement your offense and cannot score points.  If you are not stopping the volleyball from hitting the ground you are not preventing the other team from scoring points.  It’s a twofold issue in volleyball and a lack of defense really separates the good teams from the mediocre and embarrasses the bad teams.

Defense in volleyball can be broken down into 3 major areas:

Ball Control
On The Court Movement
Tenacity or Aggressiveness

Each skill learned.  Each skill is trainable.  And each skill above can be further broken down into skill sets that each player must master before fully realizing their true ability.   There are certain rules that must be followed to maximize each of the above.  These start with where and how to stand on the court.  This very basic idea is often overlooked by many coaches which immediately puts a ceiling on a players ability.

The Prep Performance Defensive School

Our clinics start at the beginning, working on placement and body control while seamlessly working towards more challenging drills and building on a players overall ability to contribute to the team.  Throughout the session the player works from the basics to the more advanced, each drill building on the previous and finally ending with controlled on the court drills which mimic game like situations and allow the player to constantly challenge themselves and hone their skill.
While not everyone can have the height and athleticism to be a dominant offensive player, anyone can build the defensive skills to be a contributing member to a championship team.  It takes hard work and it takes a well thought out progression and at Prep Performance we want to give your athlete this opportunity.
